Oden Philosophy

The hidden cost of SMS in pet software.

Every pet software platform charges extra for SMS. Some mark up the cost 2-5x. Oden does not. Here is why that matters — and how to stop paying for it.

SMS is universally metered

We analyzed every major pet business software platform. Every single one charges extra for SMS. Not one includes unlimited text messaging in their base price. The charges come in different forms — per-message fees, monthly add-ons, tier-based limits — but the result is the same: your $49/month software becomes $150+/month once you actually use SMS the way a real pet business needs to.

Here is what pet professionals told us about SMS pricing:

  • "Loved the software, built my business with it, then surprised me with a huge increase — went from $39 a month to $200 a month!"
  • "One drawback I experienced is the additional fee required for messaging."
  • "Paying for texts but they are worth it." (Said with resignation, not enthusiasm.)
  • "The day after taking over, I was hit with an unexpected $2,000 'gateway fee' on my credit card."

These are not isolated complaints. They are the industry standard. And they are the direct result of how pet software companies think about SMS.

How SMS markup actually works

SMS messages are cheap. A standard text message through Twilio — the provider most pet software companies use behind the scenes — costs about $0.0079 per message in the US. That is less than a penny.

But pet software companies do not pass that cost through to you. They mark it up. Here is how:

Per-message markup
Some platforms charge $0.02-$0.05 per message — a 2-6x markup over the actual Twilio cost. A busy trainer sending 500 messages/month pays $10-$25 for something that costs $4.
Tiered SMS add-ons
Other platforms force you to upgrade to a higher plan tier to "unlock" SMS. Your $49 plan becomes $119 or $149 — not because you need more features, but because you need texts.
Gateway fees
Some platforms charge a percentage of your payment volume as a "gateway fee" — on top of the processor fee, on top of the SMS cost. It adds up fast.

The result? A pet business that budgets $49/month for software ends up paying $150-$250/month — and half of that is SMS markup.

Why this matters for pet professionals

SMS is not a luxury for pet businesses. It is the primary way clients communicate. Appointment reminders, confirmations, homework prompts, follow-ups — these are not optional messages. They are the difference between a client who shows up and a client who no-shows.

When software companies meter SMS, they are taxing the most important communication channel in your business. Every reminder you send costs money. Every confirmation costs money. Every homework prompt costs money. And because you cannot run a modern pet business without SMS, you pay — month after month, year after year.

This is not a sustainable model for the 86.5% of pet businesses that are small operations with tight margins. It is a model designed to extract maximum revenue from customers who have no alternative.

Oden's philosophy: No SMS markup

Oden takes a different approach. We do not add a platform markup on SMS. Ever.

Here is how it works:

  • Bring your own Twilio. If you already have a Twilio account — or want to create one — Oden integrates it directly. You pay Twilio's cost per message. Oden takes nothing. You see exactly what each message costs, because Twilio bills you directly.
  • Or use Oden's account — at cost. If you do not want to manage your own Twilio account, you can use Oden's. We pass through the exact per-message cost with zero markup. You see the cost in your Oden dashboard, and it matches what Twilio charges — to the penny.

Either way, you pay what the provider charges. Not a penny more. No metered messaging tiers. No "unlock SMS" plan upgrades. No surprise $2,000 gateway fees.

The math: what this actually saves you

Let's say you are a solo canine behaviorist who sends 400 SMS messages per month — appointment reminders, confirmations, homework prompts, and follow-ups. Here is what that costs on different platforms:

PlatformMonthly SMS cost (400 msgs)Annual cost
Cheaper solutions (metered)$8-$20 (at $0.02-$0.05/msg)$96-$240
Mid-tier platforms (SMS add-on)$29-$49 (forced plan upgrade)$348-$588
Oden (BYO Twilio)$3.16 (at $0.0079/msg)$37.92

Over a year, that is $300-$550 in savings — on SMS alone. For a small pet business, that is a meaningful difference.

The bigger principle: Bring Your Own

The no-SMS-markup policy is part of a larger Oden principle we call Bring Your Own. It means:

  • Bring your own Twilio — for SMS, at provider cost
  • Bring your own Stripe — for payments, no platform markup
  • Bring your own domain — for your website and email
  • Bring your own email provider — for newsletters and transactional email

The principle is simple: your business is yours. The services you use to run it should be yours too. Oden connects the services you already trust — we do not own them, and we do not mark them up.

This is the opposite of how most pet software works. Most platforms want to own every part of your business — your SMS, your payments, your email, your data. They lock you in, mark up the services, and make it expensive to leave. Oden's philosophy is the inverse: we connect what you already have, charge transparently for our software, and let you leave whenever you want.

What to check on your current platform

If you are currently using pet software, check your last invoice. Look for:

  • Per-message SMS charges — how much are you paying per text?
  • SMS add-on fees — are you paying a monthly premium just to send texts?
  • Gateway or processing fees — are there percentage-based fees on top of your processor?
  • Plan tier — did you upgrade your plan just to get SMS?

If you are paying more than $0.01 per message — or if you upgraded your plan just for SMS — you are paying a markup. And you do not have to.

Oden's promise

We will never add a platform markup on SMS. We will never force you to upgrade your plan to send texts. We will never charge a gateway fee. And we will always let you bring your own Twilio — so you see exactly what messages cost, and you stay in control.

This is not a feature. It is a philosophy. And it is one of the reasons Oden exists — because pet professionals deserve transparent pricing, not hidden markups.
